Fighting Corruption in Municipalities
Fighting Corruption in Municipalities
The project focuses on municipalities in Israel and is based on quantitative empirical examination of a variety of sources: judgments, investigative materials, state comptroller's reports, analysis of demographic and budgetary variables, interviews and more. Up to now, we reviewed and examined more than 20 cases of corruption that occurred in 18 different municipalities, in which 24 elected officials - mayors and deputies - have been charged. The cases include severe offenses such as bribery, fraud and breach of trust, reflecting biasing public decisions in exchange for benefits and misusing authority motivated by self-interests. The objective of this project is to analyze government corruption, its causes and consequences. The insights so far, position the phenomenon as a proven social disease that undermines the public's trust in government institutions, and harms the municipalities' finance, citizens' well-being and equal opportunities. The project offers solutions that can significantly reduce corruption while improving the system's efficiency and its governance.
